GUIDELINES FOR GATHERING RESOURCE, LABOR MARKET, DEMOGRAPHIC, AND OTHER INFORMATION FOR USE IN PLANNING COMMUNITY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE GUIDE IS ONE IN A SERIES OF NINE PUBLICATIONS DESIGNED TO HELP COMMUNITIES IMPLEMENT THE NOSR YOUTH WORK EXPERIENCE MODEL. THE KINDS OF DATA NEEDED BY PROGRAM PLANNERS AND POSSIBLE SOURCES FOR OBTAINING THE DATA ARE DESCRIBED. INCLUDED ARE SECTIONS ON COMMUNITY RESOURCES (EDUCATION, SUPPORT SERVICES, PROGRAM FACILITIES, POTENTIAL WORK STATIONS); LABOR MARKET INFORMATION; DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION; AND HISTORICAL INFORMATION. DATA ON EXISTING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, SERVICES, FACILITIES, AND POTENTIAL WORK STATIONS ARE NEEDED TO ASSESS THE COMMUNITY RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THE EDUCATIONAL AND WORK EXPERIENCE COMPONENTS OF THE YOUTH PROGRAM. LABOR MARKET INFORMATION IS NEEDED TO LINK EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE TO THE REALITIES OF THE COMMUNITY'S EMPLOYMENT SITUATION. DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION IS RELEVANT TO ASSESSING THE TARGET POPULATION. HISTORICAL INFORMATION -- EVALUATIONS OF PREVIOUS YOUTH PROGRAMS, ASSESSMENTS OF TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY ATTITUDES TOWARD YOUTH AND THEIR PROBLEMS -- IS USEFUL IN AVOIDING REPETITIONS OF PAST MISTAKES. STRATEGIES FOR GATHERING AND USING THE DATA ARE OUTLINED. FOR A RELATED DOCUMENT AND OTHER NOSR IMPLEMENTATION GUIDES, SEE NCJ 44987-44990 AND 44992-44996.
