Abstract
To provide a more stable basis than the variable quarterly figures on which to assess changes, comparisons were made of figures for the two most recent 12-month periods. In the 12 months ending June 1990, 4.2 million offenses were recorded; a 13-percent increase over 1989. The annual average increase was 5 percent between 1980 and 1989. Of the 4.2 million offenses recorded in the 12 months ending June 1990, 3.9 million were crimes against property, 244,000 were crimes against the person (violent crimes, sexual offenses, and robbery), and the remaining 30,000 were other types of crime. There were wide variations in the figures for different types of crime. More than half the overall increase of 466,000 in the 12 months ending June 1990 was due to 250,000 more thefts. There were relatively small increases in violent crimes: violent crimes against the person increased by 12,000 (7 percent), sexual offenses by 1,200 (4 percent), and robberies by 1,800 (5 percent). 5 figures and tables
