In the third quarter of 1989, the police in England and Wales recorded 957,000 offenses, of which nearly 93 percent were crimes against property and 7 percent were violent crimes against the person.
Abstract
In the 12 months ending with September 1989, 3.8 million offenses were recorded, 8,000 fewer than in the previous 12 months. There were 4 percent fewer burglaries as of September 1989 than as of September 1988, 5 percent fewer motor vehicle thefts, and 5 percent fewer shop thefts. Other theft, however, was up 3 percent, and violent offenses against the person increased by 14 percent. Sex offenses increased by 7 percent and robbery by 1 percent. 5 tables, 4 figures.
