The police in England and Wales recorded 5.1 million offenses in 1995, a decline of 2 percent from 1994.
Abstract
Ninety-three percent of the crimes were against property; 6 percent were violent crimes. Vehicle-related crime declined by 4 percent for the third consecutive annual decline. Thefts also declined by 4 percent to 2.5 million. Burglaries decreased by 1 percent to 1.2 million. Overall violent crime increased by 5,400 offenses or 2 percent. However, violence against the person declined by 1 percent; this decline was the first in a calendar year in 49 years. Sex offenses declined by 5 percent, while robberies increased by 14 percent. Almost two-thirds of violent crimes were cleared in 1995. Twenty-six percent of all offenses were cleared in 1995. This result was the same as in 1995. Figures, tables, map, notes, and attached tables
