NSPCC IS A REGISTERED CHARITY WITH AN ANNUAL BUDGET OF ABOUT 1.2 MILLION POUNDS. IN 1978, 15,213 NEW CASES INVOLVING 40,052 CHILDREN WERE OPENED. CASES INVOLVED LACK OF PROPER CARE, PHYSICAL INJURIES, MATERIAL OR FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, AND OTHERS. ABOUT 1 PERCENT OF THE CASES RESULTED IN COURT ACTION, ABOUT 60 PERCENT WERE ACCEPTED BY NSPCC FOR CONTINUING TREATMENT, AND THE REMAINDER WERE EITHER TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER AGENCY OR CLOSED AFTER GIVING HELP AND ADVICE OR FINDING THAT NO ACTION WAS NEEDED. NSPCC SERVICES PROVIDED INCLUDED THE NATIONAL ADVISORY CENTER ON THE BATTERED CHILD; 7 SPECIAL UNITS ON 24-HOUR CALL FOR THE TREATMENT OF BATTERED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES; PLAYGROUP PROGRAMS AND MOTHER-TODDLER CLUBS IN ENGLAND, WALES, AND ULSTER; TRAINING OF SOCIAL WORKERS AT THE NSPCC SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK; AND EMERGENCY RELIEF FOR NEEDY FAMILIES. CASE EXAMPLES OF REPORTS OF ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN, TABLES, AND A FINANCIAL STATEMENT ARE INCLUDED. (CFW)
