A security system is outlined that meets both general and nuclear plant security requirements.
Abstract
Characteristics of nuclear plant security systems are discussed including the ability of the system to respond to different kinds of threats and the existence of separate monitoring systems. A dual-computer system is described in which the computers are interconnected by controllers and timers to allow either unit to take over if the other unit fails. In addition, the article delineates the following subsystems which are connected to the two computers: perimeter intrusion detection, closed-circuit television, guard tour and duress alarm, personnel and package search, communications, and data collection and processing. Guidelines are given for computer selection in terms of speed, reliability, expandability, ease of operation, and ability to maximize system performance and minimize development cost. In addition, the system should be adaptable to evolving regulations by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Diagrams of the security system are included.
