A recent survey revealed that the number of sex offenders in United States prisons increased by nearly 48 percent from 1988 to 1990, compared to a 20-percent increase in the total population.
Abstract
Forty-nine of the 52 State and Federal prison systems reported 85,647 sex offenders incarcerated in 1990, compared to 58,000 in 1988. Forty-three systems had increases, and five had decreases overall, 12.3 percent of inmates were sex offenders in 1990, an increase from 11.4 percent in 1988. Many respondents reported an increase in treatment programming in their institutions during the last 2 years. Nearly all offer individual or group counseling or both for sex offenders. Twenty-seven systems have inmate support groups; 13 systems provide service such as inmate drug treatment, medical treatment, and psychiatric consultation. Sixteen systems house sex offenders separately for treatment and security reasons. Sex offenders posed special management problems in 20 systems. Tables
