Using step-by-step instructions accompanied by photographs, this book explains the use of the nunchaku -- two sticks tied together with a piece of rope or string -- by police to block attacks and to force assailants into submission.
Abstract
An introduction explains the origins of this weapon in Okinawa, its nicknames, and its use in police work. Its advantages over nightsticks and its disadvantages in terms of the training required, potential for injury for the user or the user's opponent, and illegality in some States are noted. Three types of nunchaku are described and illustrated. Individual chapters explain warm-up exercises, ready positions and stances, basic stick movements and catches, and methods of blocking an attack without making a harsh closed stick movements to strike the most vulnerable areas of an opponent's body are described. Drills to develop advanced striking and throwing skills are presented. The use of the nunchaku in defending against grabs, against knife attacks, and in blocking and kicking combinations is detailed. Techniques for bringing an opponent to the ground are also portrayed. A workout to improve coordination and use of the weapon and attack drills to improve reflexes are also provided. A glossary and a form for evaluating student performance are included.
