AN ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP AN OBJECTIVE METHOD OF GSR INTERPRETATION AND TO ANALYZE AND CLARIFY THE ORDINARY PROCESS OF SUBJECTIVE GSR INTERPRETATIONS IS PRESENTED IN THIS STUDY.
Abstract
IN THE FIELD OF APPLICATION OF THE DETECTION OF DECEPTION, INTERPRETATION OF CHARTS ARE SUBJECTIVE AND THE INTERPRETATION PROCESS IS NOT NECESSARILY CLEAR. MATERIALS USED IN THIS STUDY CONSISTED OF 30 'CARD TEST' CHARTS WHICH WERE OBTAINED PRIOR TO EACH ROUTINE FIELD EXAMINATION CONDUCTED BY THREE EXAMINERS. SUBJECTIVE ANALYSIS WAS CONDUCTED BY 26 EXAMINERS WHO WERE SHOWN EACH CHART AND ASKED TO POINT OUT WHICH IS MOST LIKELY TO BE THE ONE CRITICAL QUESTION RESPONSE ON EACH CHART. FOR THE PURPOSE OF OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS, THE RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS WITHIN EACH SERIES WERE RANKED FROM ONE TO SIX, ACCORDING TO THE AMPLITUDE OF GALVANIC SKIN RESPONSE (GSR). THE RANKS OF THE ITEMS TAKEN FROM THE SAME QUESTIONNAIRE WERE SUMMED ACROSS QUESTIONS AND CALCULATED MEAN RANKS SUCH THAT FOR EACH SUBJECT THERE WERE SIX MEAN RANKS. STUDY RESULTS SHOWED THAT 23, OR 76.3 PERCENT, OF THE ITEMS WHICH PRODUCED THE MINIMAL SUM OF RANKS WITHIN A SUBJECT WERE CRITICAL ITEMS. THE MEAN NUMBER OF ITEMS LESS THAN 1.99 WERE ALL CRITICAL ITEMS. THE MEAN NUMBER OF ITEMS DETECTED CORRECTLY BY THE 26 EXAMINERS' ANALYSIS WAS 44.3 PERCENT. THE RANK CORRELATION BETWEEN NUMBER OF CORRECT DETECTIONS WHICH WERE INTERPRETED SUBJECTIVELY AND VALUES OF MEAN RANK OF CRITICAL ITEMS ON EACH CHART WAS 0.75. THE RESULT OF OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SUGGESTS THAT, AT VISUAL INSPECTION, LARGER INCIDENTAL RESPONSES SHOULD NOT BE THE POINT AIMED AT, BUT A CONSISTENCY IN THE OCCURRENCE OF RESPONSES TO A CERTAIN ITEM SHOULD BE THE FOCUS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY OF INTERPRETATION. TABULAR STATISTICAL DATA, CHARTS, AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED IN THE ARTICLE. (AUTHOR-ABSTRACT-MODIFIED). (LWM)
