Abstract
Chapter 1 presents data on trends in Probation Service caseloads, followed by a chapter with statistics on presentence and sentence reports prepared by the Probation Service. Chapter 3 presents statistics on offenders entering probation in 2004. They address sentence type, gender, length of the order, offense, age, ethnic group, criminal history, and electronic monitoring. Similar data are provided in a chapter on the characteristics of all probationers. Chapter 5 contains data on the completion and breach of community sentences, including the reason for termination, violations of sentencing conditions, and reoffending. The reconviction rates for offenders who began community sentences in 2001 are presented in chapter 6. This is followed by a chapter with statistics on prison admissions. Data cover first-time admissions, custody type, gender, sentence length, offense, age, ethnicity, and nationality. Similar data are provided for the whole prison population, with the addition of data on religion, criminal history, and international comparisons. A chapter on disciplinary actions against inmates covers the number of offenses and their types, the sex of inmates disciplined, and punishments. Chapter 10 presents data on releases, reincarcerations after being on parole, and parole violations. The final chapter shows reconviction rates for inmates released in 2001.
