Abstract
END OF YEAR POPULATIONS IN WISCONSIN ADULT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS HAVE DECREASED BY APPROXIMATELY 18 PERCENT FOR MALES AND 32 PERCENT FOR FEMALES SINCE 1971. ALMOST THREE-FOURTHS OF THE TOTAL MALES AND NINE-TENTHS OF FEMALE ADMISSIONS WERE WITH NEW SENTENCES. THE MALE POPULATION IS PREDOMINANTLY WHITE, WHILE THE FEMALE POPULATION IS EVENLY DIVIDED. MEDIAN AGE FOR FEMALES HAS DROPPED, WHILE MEDIAN AGE OF RESIDENT MALES SHOWS LITTLE CHANGE. MORE FEMALES THAN MALES HAVE SENTENCES UNDER TEN YEARS AND HAVE BEEN INCARCERATED LESS THAN TWO YEARS. THE STATISTICS ALSO INDICATE THAT THE PORTION OF RESIDENTS INCARCERATED FOR OFFENSES AGAINST PERSONS HAS RISEN STEADILY, COMPOSING NEARLY 38 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL.
