FOURTH IN A SERIES OF SIX POLICE TRAINING FILMS ON MAXIMIZING OFFICER SURVIVAL AND MINIMIZING THE POSSIBILITY OF ASSAULT AND POLICE/CITIZEN INJURY THROUGH USE OF THE DISCRETIONARY ALTERNATIVES APPROACH.
Abstract
THIS APPROACH INVOLVES INTRODUCING AN IMPARTIAL THIRD PARTY INTO THE DISPUTE, GETTING THE CONFLICT TO THE POINT WHERE THE DISPUTANTS CAN TALK TO ONE ANOTHER CALMLY, AND THEN QUICKLY MOVING BEYOND THE PRECIPITATING INCIDENTS TO IDENTIFY THE UNDERLYING ISSUE OR ISSUES. TWO CONFLICT RESOLUTION MODELS ARE EMPHASIZED - THE NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT PROCESS KNOWN AS MEDIATION AND REFERRAL TO COMMUNITY AGENCIES. THIS FILM ILLUSTRATES HOW TO IDENTIFY SPECIFICALLY AND QUICKLY THE PROBLEMS UNDERLYING A DISPUTE THROUGH A PROCESS OF CALM, ORGANIZED INFORMATION GATHERING. SEVERAL THINGS APPEAR ON THE SURFACE TO BE THE PROBLEM, ANY ONE OF WHICH THE OFFICERS COULD HAVE ADVISED THE DISPUTANTS AS TO THEIR COURSE OF ACTION AND LEFT. HOWEVER, THROUGH THE USE OF GOOD LISTENING AND COMMUNICATING SKILLS, THE OFFICER IS ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE UNDERLYING ISSUES OF THE CONFLICT. KNOWING WHAT THE ISSUES ARE, THE OFFICERS WILL BE ABLE TO MOVE ON TO ONE OF THE CONFLICT RESOLUTION PROCESSES MENTIONED ABOVE. THIS FILM ALSO DEALS WITH THE OFTEN IGNORED PSYCHOLOGICAL SURVIVAL OF A POLICE OFFICER JEOPARDIZED BY 'NEGATIVE OVERLOADING,' THE IMPACT OF NEGATIVE CONTACT AFTER NEGATIVE CONTACT ON THE ATTITUDES OF PATROL OFFICERS. THE SIX FILMS IN THIS SERIES WERE DESIGNED TO BE USED AS A PROGRESSIVE UNIT WHICH WILL PROVOKE DISCUSSION AFTER NUMEROUS SHOWINGS.
