This report provides information on arrest-related deaths in Ohio that occurred in 2011.
Abstract
Major findings from this report on arrest-related deaths in Ohio during 2011 include the following: of the 43 arrest-related deaths in Ohio in 2011, homicide by law enforcement personnel accounted for 77 percent while suicide accounted for 21 percent; all 43 arrest-related deaths were males, with Whites accounting for 58 percent and Blacks accounting for approximately 40 percent of decedents; 26 percent of decedents had documented cases of mental illness3; just over one-third of arrest-related deaths occurred in 3 counties, with 17 counties having at least 1 arrest-related death; in 61 percent of arrest-related deaths, charges were intended to be filed against the decedent, and approximately 86 percent of decedents allegedly engaged in violent offenses; and local police departments were involved in 93 percent of reported arrest-related death incidents. This report was compiled by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Services. The report is compiled annually and the data is submitted to the Bureau of Justice Statistics to be included in the Federal Arrest-Related Deaths Program. 1 figure, 10 tables, and addendum (Arrest-related Death Report Form)
