Abstract
The inmate population increased from 31,500 in 1991 to almost 46,000 in 1997. Accomplishments during the year included adding parole and other hearings to the agency's telemedicine teleconferencing capabilities, the expansion of the Inmate Progression System and its change into the Department Offender Tracking System, and the establishment of the agency's Intranet. Additional accomplishments included the establishment of the agency's multimedia center and the launching of a digitized identification system for staff and inmates. The Department of Corrections also established a confidential telephone line to help interdict contraband coming into correctional institutions, developed a program for youthful offenders, and expanded efforts to manage critical incidents.
