Goals of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) are to provide national leadership, direction, coordination, and resources in preventing, treating, and controlling juvenile delinquency; to improve the effectiveness and fairness of the juvenile justice system; to address the problem of missing and exploited children; and to develop the full potential of youth.
Abstract
To accomplish its goals, the OJJDP promotes a team approach that involves public participation. The OJJDP has divisions that focus on research and program development, training and technical assistance, State relations and assistance, information dissemination and planning, Federal programs, and missing and exploited children. The OJJDP works closely with other Federal agencies, State and local governments, and private organizations to improve juvenile justice policies and programs. Initiatives undertaken by the OJJDP to have a positive and practical impact on youth problems encompass juvenile delinquency prevention; improvements in the effectiveness of juvenile and family courts, detention, corrections, and aftercare; alternatives to youth at risk of delinquency; school dropout reduction; and appropriate sanctions for serious, violent, and chronic juvenile offenders. Each OJJDP division is described, along with the Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
