This report presents the features and results of an OJJDP (Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention) discretionary grant initiative that enabled seven colleges to develop and implement evidence-based initiatives to reduce alcoholic beverage availability and consumption by underage college students.
Abstract
This funding program encouraged the participating colleges to develop partnerships among campus and community enforcement agencies, student groups, college administrations and departments, and community organizations and businesses. Strategies developed and implemented by these partnerships included regular compliance checks of bars and retail sellers; increased enforcement of alcohol-consumption laws on days of college athletic games; increased party patrol and enhanced enforcement of campus alcohol policies early in the school year; increased highway safety checkpoints; increased checking of IDs at retail establishments selling alcoholic beverages; increased special-event and designated-area enforcement, such as alcohol-free zones; and increased adjudication of alcohol-related arrests. Impressive results are reported for each of these strategies. Specific strategies developed by each of the seven participating colleges are described, and outcomes are reported. 1 table and 1 figure
