This online newsletter of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) for March/April 2015 reports a "Top Story" on a recent OJJDP-sponsored program and provides access to articles and news from the winter issue of the Journal of Juvenile Justice.
Abstract
The "Top Story," "Smart on Juvenile Justice Initiative: Implementation Update" reports that as part of OJJDP's Smart on Juvenile Justice Initiative, OJJDP has partnered with The Pew Charitable Trusts' Public Safety Performance Project to support the implementation of statewide juvenile justice reforms in Georgia, Hawaii, and Kentucky. Reforms include diversion alternatives, community-based options, and other changes designed to reduce recidivism, decrease correctional spending, and improve public safety. An article from the Journal of Juvenile Justice, "OJJDP Updates Statistical Briefing Book," reports on updates to this Web site with statistics on a variety of juvenile justice topics. The latest update includes data from 1985 through 2012 on national, State, and county arrest estimates. A second journal article, " Urban Institute Releases Report on LGBTQ Youth Engaged in the Commercial Sex Market," reports on how this group of young men and women have become involved in the commercial sex trade for food, shelter, money, and other basic survival needs. A third journal article, "IACP Releases Brief on Adolescent Development and Policing," reports on an online brief designed to assist police who interact with youth to better understand normal adolescent development and behavior. Other journal articles report on online resources that address trauma consultation in juvenile and family courts, the launching of an online journal on juvenile services, and an online video series that addresses child maltreatment.
