STARTING IN 1968, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS BEGAN WORKING TOWARDS ADVANCED DEGREES WITH OLEA GRANTS PAYING FOR THE TRAINING.
Abstract
POLICE CHIEFS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY HAVE RELEASED ONE OR MORE OF THEIR OFFICERS FOR A YEAR OF EDUCATION TOWARDS A MASTER'S DEGREE IN ONE OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELDS. OLEA GRANTS PROVIDE TUITIONS AND FEES PLUS STIPENDS TO COVER LIVING EXPENSES. DEPARTMENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO GIVE NOT ONLY TIME OFF, BUT TO MAINTAIN THE OFFICER ON A SALARY BASIS FOR THE PERIOD OF THE STUDY. PART OF THE STUDIES ARE FIELD PLACEMENT INTERNSHIPS IN FIELDS WHICH WOULD HAVE TRANSFER VALUE TO THE OFFICERS AND DEPARTMENT. THIS EDUCATION PROGRAM WILL DO MUCH TO UPGRADE THE OFFICER AND HIS DEPARTMENT AND IN THE LONG RUN THE EFFICIENCY AND IMAGE OF TOTAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.
