THE 1979 ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE OMAHA POLICE DIVISION (NEBRASKA) CONTIANS STATISTICAL INFORMATION ON FUNDS AND EXPENDITURES, PERSONNEL STRENGTH AND ASSIGNMENTS, CRIMES, ARREST, AND MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS.
Abstract
OMAHA HAS A TOTAL POLICE BUDGET OF $16 MILLION AND EMPLOYS 579 SWORN OFFICERS AND 143 CIVILIANS. OF THE OFFICERS, 338 ARE UNIFORMED FIELD OFFICERS. THE OMAHA POLICE DIVISION (PD) CURRENTLY USES 226 POLICE VEHICLES. IN 1979, OUT OF 127 POLICE OFFICERS ASSAULTED, 60 WERE ON DISTURBANCE CALLS AND 18 WERE INJURED WHILE STOPPING A MOTOR VEHICLE. MOST ASSAULTS INVOLVED WEAPONS OTHER THAN FISTS, AND MOST ASSAULTED OFFICERS WERE NOT ALONE. HOWEVER, NO POLICE OFFICER WAS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN 1979. REPORTED INCIDENTS OF SERIOUS CRIME INCREASED BY 13 PERCENT OVER 1978, WITH PERCENTAGE INCREASES VARYING FROM 2 PERCENT FOR BURGLARY TO 67 PERCENT FOR CRIMINAL HOMICIDE. HOWEVER, ARRESTS DROPPED FROM 21,000 TO 20,000, WITH WHITE ARRESTEES OUTNUMBERING BLACKS TWO TO ONE. THE GREATEST NUMBER OF ARRESTS WERE MADE FOR LARCENY, DRUG OFFENSES, DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE, AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT. A TOTAL OF 2,671 JUVENILES WERE ARRESTED, MALES OUTNUBERING FEMALES FOUR TO ONE. THE OMAHA PD REPORTS 13,786 TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND 30 TRAFFIC DEATHS IN 1979, A DROP OF 21 PERCENT AND 5 PERCENT, RESPECTIVELY, OVER 1978. ABOUT HALF OF THE DRIVERS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS WERE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 20 AND 34 AND 22 OF 30 FATALITIES WERE INCURRED IN ACCIDENTS INVOLVING ALCOHOL USE. IN ADDITION, THE PD RECEIVED 209,000 CALLS FOR SERVICE IN 1979. ILLUSTRATIONS AND TABULAR INFORMATION ARE INCLUDED.
