Abstract
THE OMBUDSMAN PROJECT OF THE NEW YORK STATE DIVISION FOR YOUTH IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ATTORNEYS TO VISIT RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES IN ORDER TO LISTEN TO GRIEVANCES OF YOUTHS IN THE PROGRAM, ADVISE YOUTHS OF THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS, AND ACT TO PROTECT YOUTHS WHEN THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT THEIR RIGHTS HAVE BEEN ABRIDGED. AMONG THE MATERIALS PRESENTED ARE A PRISONERS RIGHTS SOURCE BOOK, A REPORT ON THE NEW YORK STATE OMBUDSMAN BY THE COUNCIL OF STATE GOVERNMENTS, AND A REPORT BY THE INSTITUTE OF JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION ON OMBUDSMAN PROGRAMS. ALSO INCLUDED ARE MATERIALS PREPARED BY THE OMBUDSMAN PROJECT DIRECTOR: THE OMBUDSMAN HANDBOOK FOR STAFF AND A BOOKLET EXPLAINING THE OMBUDSMAN TO RESIDENTS. PROJECT REPORTS SUBMITTED TO THE NEW YORK STATE DIVISION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SERVICES, THE ORIGINAL GRANT PROPOSAL, AND STATISTICS ON THE NUMBERS, TYPES, AND LEGITIMACY OF RESIDENT'S COMPLAINTS, TAKEN FROM THE OMBUDSMAN MONTHLY REPORTS ARE PROVIDED AS WELL.
