This update provides an overview on the prevalence of prescription pain reliever abuse and prevention and the release of the United Nations 2010 World Drug Report.
Abstract
Following an announcement on the confirmation of two new Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) deputy directors, this issue of the ONDCP Update highlights several articles focused on prescription pain reliever abuse. The first article shows the dramatic rise in the prevalence of prescription drug abuse. The second released the results of the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) study on prescription drug abuse. In the third article, the drug take-back programs are described as a common sense approach in making unused medications unavailable for misuse. The fourth and final article provides a brief overview of Delaware's new legislation establishing a database of prescription information from pharmacies in the State. The update concludes with a brief overview of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) release of the 2010 World Drug Report.
