This article describes the process undertaken by the Sylvania Township Police Department in Ohio to become accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Incorporated (CALEA).
Abstract
Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Incorporated (CALEA) is not seen as a panacea for all the ills of a police department. However, it is one step that any agency can undertake to ensure compliance with the highest standard of the law enforcement profession. Facing significant departmental challenges such as managerial, internal controls, written directives, internal review, and unified direction the Sylvania Township Police Department in Sylvania, OH sought to deal with these issues as well as pursue accreditation through CALEA. This article briefly describes both the pre- and post-accreditation process the department followed with the hopes of accomplishing reduced liability, management and department stability, complete set of written directive, tools for the future, and reduced costs. 7 notes
