This report describes 100 promising crime prevention programs and strategies from countries around the world; the book has been adapted for use in the United States and is intended to help local governments, businesses, and citizens to learn from the experiences of other countries.
Abstract
The descriptions programs with documented effectiveness and those that have not been evaluated but are included for both the quality of the process used and their focus on issues in need of sustainable solutions. The report describes how governments, citizens, educational institutions, police, social services, and professionals in other sectors have mobilized, often in collaboration with voluntary groups and individuals, to address the factors that lead to crime. The programs include strategies that support action, joint action that has reduced crime, and initiatives likely to provide a basis for ongoing action. The program descriptions are grouped into four categories: (1) administrations, including the efforts of national, regional, and local governments to promote and sustain crime prevention; (2) the services sector, which includes efforts by social and health services, schools, and associations; (3) the formal intervention system, including crime prevention activities of police and other criminal justice agencies; and (4) private enterprise. The description of each program includes an outline of the action taken and the characteristics most likely to promote the conditions for success, as well as information resources and contact information.
