This report documents the use of custody for juveniles between the ages of 14 and 16 appearing in juvenile courts in Greater Manchester (England) in 1991.
Abstract
The report examines findings from an analysis of custodial juvenile sentences, focusing on age, race, and gender of defendants; daytime occupation at time offense; place of residence; remand or bail decisions; offending trends; pleas; involvement with other delinquents; sentence length; Social Inquiry Report recommendations; criteria used for custody decisions; and appeals against sentence. The report considers some of the implications for juvenile custody arising from implementation of the Criminal Justice Act 1991, and explores in more detail some concerns remaining about the use of custodial sentences for juveniles. 3 appendixes
