BASED ON ACTUAL FIELD TESTING, THE 'ONE-WRITE' SYSTEM OF HANDWRITTEN POLICE REPORTS IS RECOMMENDED AS A MEANS OF SPEEDING POLICE REPORTING, ELIMINATING REPORT BACKLOGS, AND EFFECTING A COST SAVINGS IN THE PROCESS.
Abstract
USING THE 'ONE-WRITE' SYSTEM, OFFICERS HANDWRITE THEIR REPORT AT THE SCENE OF AN INCIDENT AND SUBSEQUENTLY SUBMIT IT AT THE STATION HOUSE, WHERE IT IS MECHANICALLY DUPLICATED AND DISTRIBUTED AS NECESSARY. ONLY IN THE CASE OF LENGTHY INVESTIGATIONS OR FOLLOW-UP, ARE REPORTS TYPED. IN TESTING, THIS PROCEDURE PROVED TO BE MORE EFFICIENT AND LESS EXPENSIVE THAN OTHER SYSTEMS OF REPORT PROCESSING (OFFICER OR CLERK COMPLETION, STATION/ FIELD/TELEPHONIC DICTATION) WHICH OFTEN YIELD CUMBERSOME BACKLOGS AND LOST REPORTS. THIS DOCUMENT PROVIDES MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES AND SAMPLE DIRECTIVES FOR IMPLEMENTING A 'ONE-WRITE' SYSTEM, INCLUDING TRAINING FOR INCREASING THE LEGIBILITY OF POLICE OFFICERS' HANDWRITING.
