This study evaluated precision, accuracy, effects of chemical adulterants, and individual specimen variability for Abuscreen ONLINE (TM) Automated Immunoassay for Opiates (ONLINE) compared with Abuscreen Radioimmunoassay (RIA) and EMIT tests for opiates.
Abstract
Certified negative urine, fortified to contain different amounts of morphine were quantified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. These replicates showed excellent (100 percent) qualitative accuracy for all three immunoassays and variable precision (RIA>EMIT>ONLINE). In a new check of precision and accuracy, 25 individually different negative urine specimens fortified with morphine gave slightly different results (ONLINE>RIA>EMIT). Moreover, when these fortified positives were adulterated with sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, bleach, and acetic acid, ONLINE generally equalled RIA and outperformed EMIT in precision and accuracy. ONLINE's standard curve exceeded the manufacturer's claim of 30 days stability. Overall, ONLINE approximately matched RIA and exceeded EMIT in most characteristics tested, showing potential for ONLINE as a fully automated urine opiates immunoassay. 2 tables, 1 figure, and 22 references
