This report of the Ontario Criminal Injuries Compensation Board (Canada) for 1989-92 describes the board's work, presents data on the awards given over the report period, and details each case under the violent offense involved.
Abstract
Under the Compensation for Victims of Crime Act, the board is authorized to provide compensation to innocent victims injured through a violent crime. The board is subrogated to all rights of any person to whom a payment is made to recover damages from the offender by civil proceedings with respect to the injury or death. A total of $58,012.21 was recovered during the 1991-92 fiscal year. In the 1991-92 fiscal year, the board heard 1,857 applications and made 2,089 awards. The total amount of awards increased from $8,904,599.52 in 1989-90 and $9,754,254.64 in 1990-91 to $12,145,412.75 in 1991-92. Awards made under the Compensation for Victims of Crime Act were cost shared between the federal government and the Province of Ontario. The federal government's contribution in 1991-92 was $2,521,221.25. The offenses for which cases are described are assault, assault bodily harm, aggravated assault, confinement, sexual assault, sexual abuse, child physical abuse, assault on police officer, dangerous use of firearms, incest, attempted murder, murder, and robbery assault.
