THE EXPERIENCES OF AN EDUCATOR WITH JUVENILE DELINQUENTS TREATED AT A FRENCH CENTER FOR 'EDUCATIONAL ACTION IN AN OPEN ENVIRONMENT' (AEMO) ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE AEMO CENTERS WERE ESTABLISHED IN THE 1950'S AND PRESENTLY TREAT APPROXIMATELY 50,000 JUVENILE DELINQUENTS AND EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED JUVENILES FROM ALL OVER FRANCE. SINCE SEVERAL AEMO CENTERS NOW EXIST IN NEARLY ALL FRENCH COUNTIES, THE JUVENILES CAN BE TREATED IN THEIR ACCUSTOMED ENVIRONMENT OF FAMILY AND SCHOOL. THE JUVENILES ARE REFERRED TO THE CENTERS BY JUVENILE JUDGES AND SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES. THE AEMO CENTER IN VAUCLUSE TREATS 400 JUVENILES OVER AN AVERAGE OF 18 MONTHS; EACH EDUCATOR HAS ABOUT 25 CLIENTS. THE EDUCATOR'S NOTES COVER EXPERIENCES WITH 28 MALE AND FEMALE CLIENTS OVER A PERIOD OF 3 MONTHS. SOME CASES ARE PRESENTED IN GREAT DETAIL, WHILE OTHERS ARE MERELY NOTED. EACH JUVENILE IS PRESENTED IN HIS FAMILY CONTEXT, AND MOST JUVENILES HAD BEEN TREATED BY THE EDUCATOR OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. EXCERPTS FROM CLIENTS' WRITING ARE APPENDED, AND CLIENTS' DRAWINGS ARE INCLUDED. --IN FRENCH. (SAJ)
