This manual aims to provide domestic violence service agencies with basic guidelines on how to reach out to and work with women with disabilities, including mobility impairments, hearing impairments, developmental disabilities, mental health disabilities, AIDS, respiratory diseases, learning disabilities, and other conditions.
Abstract
The first section outlines the scope of the problem and illustrates the circumstances experienced by women with disabilities who are being abused. The second section outlines the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the roles and responsibilities of each member of the organization in coming into compliance with the law, and tools to assist organizations in assessing their level of accessibility and planning to move toward full accessibility. The third section discusses different types of disabilities and some of the unique needs of persons with these disabilities. The final section lists resources, including organizations, publications, sources of materials in alternative formats, and other resources. Checklists, forms, and illustrations
