This report presents 1992 statistics on the use of certain police powers under Great Britain's Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE).
Abstract
One table presents data on searches of persons and vehicles under Section 1 of PACE. Another table provides data on road checks under Section 4 of PACE, by reason for road check. A third table shows the number of persons detained by police for more than 24 hours under Part IV of PACE. Two other tables address warrants of further detention and persons charged as well as intimate searches made under section 55 of PACE, by person conducting the search, reason for search, and outcome. In 1992 the police recorded 351,700 stops and searches under PACE, a 16-percent increase over 1991. A total of 48,700 arrests resulted from stops and searches in 1992, a 5-percent increase over 1991. Road checks numbered 445 for 1992, double the number in 1991. Those detained for more than 24 hours and subsequently released without charge totaled 402 persons, a 10-percent increase over 1991. There were 230 warrants of further detention in 1992. Seventy-one persons were subjected to an intimate search in 1992, five less than in 1991. 10 tables
