THIS OVERVIEW OF THE NEW YORK INMATE INFORMATION SYSTEM (IIS) INCLUDES DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FUNCTIONS, DATA EQUIPMENT, ON-LINE SYSTEM TRANSACTIONS, REPORTS PRODUCED, TRANSACTION VOLUMES, AND BENEFITS OF THE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE IIS ARE TO CREATE AND MAINTAIN INMATE RECORDS FOR NEW ADMISSIONS, TRANSFERS, AND DISCHARGED INMATES; TO PROVIDE FULL INFORMATION ON INDIVIDUAL INMATES; AND TO PRODUCE MANAGEMENT REPORTS. THE SYSTEM IS A REAL-TIME AND INTERACTIVE ONE. TYPES OF DATA MAINTAINED INCLUDE CORRECTIONAL HISTORIES, PERSONAL INMATE DATA, INMATE LOCATIONS, NON-COURT APPEARANCES, REIMBURSEMENT DATA, AND COURT CASE DATA. FIVE CATEGORIES OF TRANSACTIONS ARE USED: INQUIRY, ENTRY, CHANGE-UPDATE, MOVEMENT, AND MISCELLANEOUS. EACH OF THESE TRANSACTION TYPES IS OUTLINED. SYSTEM BENEFITS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION INCLUDE CENTRALIZED INFORMATION, COMPREHENSIVE REPORTING, AND EASIER FILE ACCESSING. BENEFITS TO AGENCIES OUTSIDE THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN IIS OPERATIONS AND FUTURE EXPANSION OF IIS ARE DESCRIBED AS WELL.
