This document from the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services, presents the 2007 Annual Report for Operation IMPACT, a crime-reduction program in the New York State.
Abstract
Key findings from this report show that for the year ended December 31, 2007, reported crime in the 17 primary IMPACT jurisdictions in New York State was down 6 percent compared to 2006; murder decreased 9 percent compared to 2006; violent crime was down 10 percent, due primarily to decreases in robbery (14-percent decrease) and aggravated assault (8-percent decrease); and property crime, burglary, and motor vehicle theft decreased 5 percent, 6 percent, and 10 percent, respectively. Operation IMPACT is a crime-reduction program begun in 2004 to provide funding, resources and technical assistance to participating State and local agencies to aid in their goal of reducing violent crime. During 2007, 96 State and local agencies in New York received Operation IMPACT funding, including: the Division of Criminal Justice Services; the New York State Police; the Division of Parole; the Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives; the State Liquor Authority; Federal Bureau law enforcement agencies; county probation departments and sheriffs' offices; district attorneys' offices; and local police agencies within IMPACT counties. In 2007, Operation IMPACT programs were supported by $17 million in funding, with grants awarded on a competitive basis requiring jurisdictions to focus their efforts on reductions in violent crime. This report is divided into five chapters that present detailed analysis and data on index crimes, violent crimes involving a firearm, firearm activity, and annual arrest trends. Tables and figures
