In response to a dramatic escalation in the number of domestic burglaries, the police department in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, England, created a specialist burglary squad comprised of nine plainclothes officers, three uniformed officers, and two local police intelligence officers.
Abstract
From the beginning, the squad concentrated its efforts on a number of people alleged to be prolific burglars. In one month of operation, 50 people were arrested and $45,000 worth of stolen property was recovered. Several months later, the police entered into a cooperative crime prevention partnership with victim services, housing associations, the local health authority, and the education department. The partnership also purchased a computer with a crime mapping facility. The burglary prevention efforts in Newton-le-Willows demonstrates an effective police crackdown on offenders and a long-term crime pattern-based policing style. 3 figures
