This book describes the basic principles for mid-level police management.
Abstract
The content is aimed at operational behavior of mid-level secondary police leaders to attain desired performance of line workers through interactive and specifically focused management actions. Chapter 1 assesses police mid-level leadership, describes the leadership approach to duties, and provides the principals of primary police leadership. Chapter 2 details the skills, characteristics, and development of leadership. In Chapter 3, the analytical skills needed for management are discussed. Chapter 4 describes the requirements and development of standards of leadership. Chapter 5 discusses decision making and problem solving. Chapter 6 details job performance controls and increasing productivity. Chapter 7 describes the considerations of mid-level management of functional-level personnel. In Chapter 8, logical inferences such as judgmental actions are discussed. Chapter 9 assesses goal oriented job leadership. The performance initiative is described in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 describes the dynamics of a secondary leader’s role in the organization, such as delegating tasks and approaching general duties. Chapter 12 discusses communication, such as transmitting and receiving information, and obstacles to communication. Chapter 13 describes developing a leadership vision that enhances a mid-level police manager’s effectiveness. Chapter 14 discusses developing a manpower usage strategy by a mid-level police manager. Chapter 15 discusses strategy projection (planning and organization). Chapter 16 describes subordinates’ appraisal process. Chapter 17 discusses overall performance effectiveness (application of dimensional trait characteristics).
