Abstract
FOLLOWING A DISCUSSION OF THE HISTORY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES OPPORTUNITIES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AT THE CITY, COUNTY, STATE, MILITARY, AND FEDERAL LEVELS. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON PERSONAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, STATE POLICE AND HIGHWAY PATROL, MILITARY POLICE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES. A CHAPTER ON ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES COVERS SALARIES, FRINGE BENEFITS, INCENTIVES, FRUSTRATIONS, AND THE ELEMENT OF DANGER. CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS WITH COMMENTS ON HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, LAW ENFORCEMENT CURRICULUM SUMMARY, CADET PROGRAMS, RECRUIT TRAINING, AND LEEP (LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM). A CHAPTER ON RELATED CAREERS EXAMINES CORRECTIONAL POSITIONS, INVESTIGATIVE POSITIONS, CRIMINALISTICS, THE POLYGRAPH OPERATOR, THE DOCUMENT EXAMINER, THE FINGERPRINT EXPERT, AND THE LAB TECHNICIAN. A LIST AND DESCRIPTION OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS AND FEDERAL AGENCIES IS PRESENTED, ALONG WITH SELECTED BOOKS AND JOURNALS. THE APPENDICES CONTAIN QUOTES FROM POLICE ADMINISTRATORS AND A LISTING OF COLLEGES OFFERING LAW ENFORCEMENT EDUCATION.
