Abstract
INDEX CRIMES, INCLUDING MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS, BURGLARY, LARCENY, AND CAR THEFT, INCREASED 6.2 PERCENT OVER 1974. DATA WERE OBTAINED DIRECTLY FROM OREGON LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES WHO REPORTED THEIR STATISTICS TO THE STATE'S UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM. ANALYSIS OF THE DATA SHOWS THAT THE STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS (SMSAS) OF EUGENE, PORTLAND, AND SALEM, ACCOUNTED FOR 69 PERCENT OF ALL REPORTED CRIMES. THE RISK OF BEING A VICTIM OF AN INDEX CRIME IS 47 PERCENT HIGHER IN THESE SMSA AREAS THAN IN THE REST OF THE STATE. VIOLENT INDEX CRIMES INCREASED 35.1 PERCENT OVER 1974, RISING TO 435 PER 100,000. VIOLENT CRIMES ACCOUNTED FOR 6.6 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL REPORTED CRIMES. ON THE OTHER HAND, PROPERTY CRIMES ACCOUNTED FOR 94.3 PERCENT OF ALL REPORTED CRIMES. 1975 FIGURES REFLECT A 5.4 PERCENT INCREASE OVER 1974. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 100,057 ARRESTS FOR ALL REPORTED OFFENSES IN 1975 AND 28.5 PERCENT OF THE ARRESTS WERE FOR INDEX OFFENSES. JUVENILE ARRESTS ACCOUNTED FOR 54 PERCENT OF ARRESTS FOR INDEX OFFENSES. MALE ARRESTS ACCOUNTED FOR 81 PERCENT OF ALL INDEX ARRESTS. OREGON'S INCREASES, SINCE 1972, IN BOTH THE INDEX AND VIOLENT CRIME RATES HAS BEEN GREATER THAN CALIFORNIA, HAWAII, AND IDAHO. VIOLENT INDEX CRIME FOR THE CITY OF PORTLAND WAS HIGHER IN 1975 THAN THAT OF SEATTLE, BUT LESS THAN SAN FRANCISCO OR LOS ANGELES, WHILE THE CITY'S PROPERTY INDEX CRIME WAS MUCH LARGER THAN ANY OF THE OTHER WEST COAST CITIES. CHARTS AND GRAPHS ARE INCLUDED. DEFINITIONS OF THE FBI'S UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING TERMS ARE APPENDED. (KCP)
