Three reports provide narrative and tabular data on Oregon's total offenses and arrests for January through June 1997, as well as data on criminal offenses motivated by prejudice and domestic- disturbance reports.
Abstract
The total number of offenses for the first 6 months of 1997 was 227,641, a 2.9-percent increase from the same period the previous year. Crimes increased in 19 of the 36 counties in the State. Crimes against persons decreased 2.9 percent, and crimes against property increased 2.2 percent. Behavioral crimes (weapon offenses, drug offenses, vice offenses, drunk driving, disorderly conduct, etc.) increased 6.0 percent. There were 87,237 arrests (excluding traffic offenses, fish and game, and marine). The number of bias crimes reported for the first 6 months of 1997 decreased 45.5 percent from the same period the previous year. Data are presented by type of prejudice compared to the same period for 1996. Data also cover reported incidents by month, by type of crime, and by type of prejudice, along with the number and description of victims and offenders. Data on crimes motivated by prejudice are also presented for each county. The county summary on domestic disturbances represents the results of reporting from 142 agencies with jurisdiction over 86.2 percent of Oregon's population. The total number of domestic disturbance incidents was 8,987, with 6,067 arrests.
