This article presents the use of organizational values to improve conditions for staff and inmates at the Onondaga County, New York Justice Center.
Abstract
Beginning with an overview of conditions and events at the Onondaga County Justice Center which encouraged the jail’s administrators to assess the need for an organizational values program, this article discusses the specific organizational values programs and principals selected by those jail administrators and the results of the implementation of the organizational values program. The value of clearly designed organizational values is presented along with the use of the principle of positive impact. Key correctional organizational values identified were safety, security, humane treatment of detentioners and professionalism of officers. Each of the four values is discussed in-depth and definitions for and components of each value are provided. The author further provides guidelines for institutions seeking to develop their own institutional values.
