Hearings before the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations pertain to the structure of organized crime and its involvement in illicit narcotics trafficking.

Abstract

Testimony from government officials and a member of Cosa Nostra (Joseph Valachi) bears upon the structure and operations of organized crime, its impact on society, the toll it exacts from the economy, and how effective or deficient existing laws are in preventing it. The subcommittee expects to determine from the testimony whether or not additional statutes are needed to cover organized crime's activities and to provide law enforcement additional tools. An examination of organized crime's involvement in drug trafficking traces it from the time opium poppies are harvested in the Middle East, through the Mediterranean, to the clandestine laboratories in Europe where it is refined, and across the ocean and through established channels of distribution in the United States.
