IN 1960, A CRIMINAL INTELLIGENCE BRANCH WAS SET UP AT NEW SCOTLAND YARD, IN ENGLAND, TO COLLECT, EVALUATE AND DISSEMINATE INFORMATION ABOUT ORGANIZED CRIME AND THE ACTIVITIES OF PROMINENT CRIMINALS AND THEIR ASSOCIATES.
Abstract
THIS BRANCH, PLUS THE FLYING SQUAD OF DETECTIVES, THE NATIONAL COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY SQUAD, THE FRAUD SQUAD, THE DRUGS SQUAD AND THE STOLEN CAR SQUAD HAVE PROVED TO BE VERY EFFECTIVE SPECIALIZED TOOLS IN COMBATTING ORGANIZED CRIME IN ENGLAND. BY 1965, NINE REGIONAL CRIME SQUADS HAD ALSO BECOME OPERATIONAL, WITH ABOUT 600 OFFICERS ALLOCATED TO THEM AND WORKING UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A NATIONAL COORDINATOR. A SERIOUS CRIMES SQUAD IN LONDON HAS BROKEN UP A NUMBER OF GANGS BEFORE THEY COULD ACHIEVE TOO MUCH POWER. STILL OTHER SPECIALIZED POLICE UNITS OPERATE REGULARLY AND WITH GOOD SUCCESS IN ENGLAND. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN COMBATTING ORGANIZED CRIME, AND THE POLICE IN ENGLAND ACTIVELY SEEK TO COOPERATE WITH FOREIGN POLICE TO THE EXTENT POSSIBLE. --IN ENGLISH AND GERMAN
