This article examines the effects of recent political, economic, and social changes on the dynamics and structure of crime in Poland.
Abstract
Since the changes, the standard of living for most Polish citizens has declined and social unrest has increased. Privatization has created numerous conflicts of interest and varied social consequences. The economic situation is complicated by political uncertainty and by the lack of a new system of values, creating an environment conducive to increased criminal activity. Data are provided on murders, terrorist acts, economic crimes, drug-related crimes, counterfeiting, auto thefts, art thefts, and robberies. Public attitudes toward and fear of crime are discussed, and the nature and extent of violent crime are considered. Attention is also paid to crime victims and to the need for citizen education and involvement in crime prevention. 10 tables and 11 footnotes
