THIS MONOGRAPH EXAMINES THE ORTHOMOLECULAR APPROACH TO OFFENDER TREATMENT, WITH EMPHASIS ON ASSESSING AND TREATING THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND DIETARY FACTORS THOUGHT TO UNDERLIE CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
THE ORTHOMOLECULAR MODEL FOR OFFENDER DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PROPOSED HERE REPRESENTS A COMBINATION OF TWO APPROACHES--ORTHOMOLECULAR PSYCHIATRY AND HOLISTIC HEALTH. ORTHOMOLECULAR TREATMENT EMBRACES THE VIEW THAT THE EXISTENCE OF CERTAIN FACTORS FROM WITHIN AND AROUND THE PHYSICAL ORGANISM CONTRIBUTE TO A METABOLIC STRESS THAT CAUSES IN SOME INDIVIDUALS A RELEASE OF CRIMINAL AGGRESSION. THUS, SINCE BEHAVIOR IS NOT SEPARATE FROM THE BODY, BY NEGATING OR CONTROLLING THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL FACTORS ACTING ON THE BODY, STRESS AND ITS CONCOMITANT PATTERN OF AGGRESSIVENESS CAN BE REDUCED OR ELIMINATED. NEW DIRECTIONS ARE DISCUSSED FOR ASSESSING SUCH ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AS LIGHT, AIR, AND THE COMMUNITY AND SUCH BIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS AS DISEASE, GENETICS, DIET, AND EXERCISE. CASE STUDIES ILLUSTRATE THE DIVERSE VARIETY OF PROBLEMS OFFENDERS FACE, THE POSSIBLE BIOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH PROBLEMS, AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMBINED DIETARY AND VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT APPROACHES TO TREATING CRIMINAL BEHAVIORS. A NUTRITION-BEHAVIOR INVENTORY FORM IS PROVIDED, ALONG WITH TABULAR DATA, REFERENCES, AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY, ARRANGED ALPHABETICALLY BY AUTHOR, LISTING SOME 90 RELATED MATERIALS PUBLISHED BETWEEN 1951 AND 1979.
