This book identifies the multitude of death causes for children and youth in America, analyzes the factors behind the high mortality statistics among the young, and proposes strategies for reducing and preventing fatalities among U.S. children and youth.
Abstract
The causes of death discussed include accidents, illnesses, drug use, violence, suicide, and child abuse. The book argues that these types of deaths are preventable. American society is portrayed as negligent and uncaring toward its young citizens. The study presents an overview of the major causes of death in every age group from infancy to age 18. Current research on child welfare is combined with the firsthand knowledge of health-care professionals, social workers, and judicial and administrative officials at various governmental levels. The book instructs parents of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, and teenagers in how to guide and protect their children and youth amidst the challenges and hazards of life. Parents are given guidance on infant nutrition, child development, safety at home and in the car, child care and child abuse, drugs, teenage drinking and driving, and suicide. Appended list of resource organizations and a 96-item bibliography
