This special newspaper supplement from the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Wayne County Juvenile Court (Michigan) reviews issues and provides information on dealing with crises facing children, youth, and families.
Abstract
Programs that prevent antisocial behavior are highlighted. Article topics include basic information on juvenile court, a youth assistance program, a probation officer's day, a profile of a family with a 40-year history of abuse and neglect, an interview with a presiding juvenile court judge, the Wayne County Youth Home (Michigan) and the crises seen there, and profiles on two delinquent children and the approaches used in treating them. A panel discussion with a psychiatrist, psychologist, and attorney on abuse and family recovery, articles on removing children at risk from their families and terminating parental rights as the line of last defense for children, and an article on the Citizens Advisory Committee are also included. Providing intervention before problems become serious, offering educational programs for parents, breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect, and emphasizing protection and rehabilitation rather than punishment and revenge are advocated. Citizens are urged to act as child advocates by identifying troubled children. A pictorial directory of key Wayne County Juvenile Court employees and a listing of telephone numbers for crises and legal services in the Wayne County area are included.
