The leading factors in crime, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, suicide, and a decline in achievement and motivation are a loss of meaning, purpose, and significance to life.
Abstract
Other factors are weak or nonexistent relationships with adults at home and school; drug and alcohol abuse; and exposure through the media to drinking, violence, and sexuality. To correct these problems, networks need to be built between neighborhoods and communities, young people must be given a meaningful role, the parenting process must be strengthened, and the skills necessary to function as an adult such as assertiveness, communication, and leadership must be taught.
