The Outward Bound Urban Adventure Project strives to develop urban adventure activities which attract and engage young people and help divert them from crime to facilitate personal development and to enable young people to make more effective decisions and exert more control over their lives.
Abstract
This description of the Outward Bound Urban Adventure Project outlines activities and discusses management and staffing issues and identifies program achievements and problems. Initiated in May 1989, the project is open to all young people on the Whitehawk estate in east Brighton in the 10- to 18-year age range. The challenging and problem solving activities offered include climbing and abseiling, rope exercises, orienteering, river crossings, hill walking, and canoeing and sailing. These activities are viewed as a vehicle for promoting personal awareness. An integral part of a town-wide crime prevention strategy, the project tries to divert youth from crime and consults residents and young people on the needs of the area. 1 table
