This report by the U.S. Justice Department's Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) presents the criteria grantees and contractors must follow in submitting materials to OVC for publication.
Abstract
The report first presents criteria for deadlines in submitting materials for publication, followed by submission requirements in the areas of package content, charts and photos, file setup, hardware, software, and format. The publishing process is then described under the topics of initial review, editing and graphic design, OVC/Justice Department approval, and dissemination of the publication. OVC product types--bulletins, reports, monographs, training guides, brochures, handbooks, promising practices, resource directories, and E-publications--are briefly described. A section on writing for print publications presents basic writing guidelines and grammar tips for good writing. Guidelines for writing an E-publication focus on how to build a Web-only document, principles of effective Web writing, and how to write for "scan readers" (persons who scan subheads, links, and lists for information that applies specifically to them). Another section of this report provides guidelines for organizing content through "chunking," which is the process of dividing information into small, clear pieces. Other sections pertain to how to choose the best words, the formatting of references/endnotes, and copyright and policy requirements.
