This report contains the text of a hearing before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Security and Terrorism regarding oversight of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Abstract
The chief witness was the Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, who addressed issues related to the connection between drugs and national security, the factors that cause young people to use illegal drugs, and the efforts being expended by the Federal Government to enforce drug laws. According to this testimony, 90 percent majority of so-called dangerous drugs, which account for 23 percent of the domestic illicit drug market, are manufactured in the U.S. Of these, at least two-thirds, including barbiturates, amphetamines, and methamphetamines, are manufactured legally and represent overprescription or specific, purposeful criminal diversion. The Administrator discussed the connections between the Sicilian mafia and exporters of Southwest Asian heroin, the Federal drug strategy, the implications of the Gambino case for drug law enforcement, and characteristics of clandestine laboratory operations.
