Annotation

Testimony by representatives of executive Federal agencies and others examines the Federal strategy of drug abuse prevention.

Abstract

The agencies represented in the testimony include the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration; the National Institute on Drug Abuse; the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; Alcohol and Drug Abuse Education Programs; Drug Enforcement Administration; the FBI; the Customs Service; the State Department; and the Department of Justice. The hearings aim to determine how Federal agencies are implementing and coordinating the expressed Federal concern for prevention and the ways in which their programs relate to other social problems, such as alcoholism, delinquency, and crime. Other issues considered in the testimony are the nature of Federal drug-prevention efforts, the viability of the Federal Drug Strategy 1979 as prepared by the President's Strategy Council on Drug Abuse, and the nature of a holistic approach to drug abuse prevention and how and by whom such a program can be implemented. Another issue examined is the extent to which appropriate Federal agencies are providing the resources for local communities to conduct drug prevention programs.
