Research on sex offenders, including sadistic rapists, is reviewed, and the case of an adolescent sadistic sex offender is reported.
Abstract
In general, much of the research on sex offenders views them as a heterogeneous population, and this view has hampered clinically meaningful sex offender subgroups to be evaluated. Research has focused on the relationship between aggression and sex; sadistic rapists; sex offender motives, such as the need for power and control; and sex offender treatment. In the case of an adolescent sadistic sex offender, the individual was 15 when he was charged with assault, threatening to kill, and attempted rape. He was sentenced to 5 years; in the course of assessment, correctional staff found a long history of deviant sexual behavior. The young man acknowledged that he became sexually aroused by some of the assessment sessions themselves. His fantasies about masturbation and knives were discussed in the course of assessment. These fantasies centered around women on television, girls, and female staff on his unit. The case study does not describe the treatment approach used. 12 references
